Darmstadt as a student city
Darmstadt is located in the southern part of the Rhine-Main-Area (Frankfurt Metropolitan Region) in Germany. Darmstadt holds the official title “City of Science” as a major center of scientific institutions, universities, and high-technology companies. Darmstadt is also the headquarters of the world’s oldest pharmaceutical company, Merck, which is the city’s largest employer. The town has many architectural wonders and a rich culture heritage with castles, monuments, churches and museums to visit. It is also famous for its past Art Nouveau movement. There are now two festivals in May and July with music, beer halls, amusement rides and booths selling trinkets and food. Darmstadt has also a high density of parks.
TU Darmstadt was founded in 1877. In 1882, it was the first university in the world to set up a chair in electrical engineering.

Study in TU Darmstadt
TU Darmstadt, through its 5 campuses, welcomes 24,985 students, among whom 22% are foreign students. It has partnership agreements with over 300 universities in 53 countries.
Despite its technical focus, TU Darmstadt offers a wide range of study programs in engineering, natural sciences and human and social sciences. TU Darmstadt has been awarded the title “European University” by the European Commission. Together with 6 other European technical universities, it has formed the alliance UNITE! (University Network for Innovation, Technology and Engineering). The university offers international (English-language) Master’s programs and a broad range of double degree programs. TU Darmstadt is a member of the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research.

Research
At TU Darmstadt, research is carried out in three major fields: Energy and Environment, Information and Intelligence and Matter and Materials.
442 doctorates were awarded in 2022, of which 21% to foreign doctoral candidates.
TU Darmstadt works with 14 Collaborative Research Centers and SFB/Transregio of the German Research Foundation, 1 LOEWE Research Centre and 7 LOEWE Research Clusters, 5 DFG Graduate Schools and has 4 Cluster Initiatives funded by the State of Hesse.
