Aveiro as a student city
Aveiro is a dynamic medium-sized city located in the middle of the Portuguese coast. In 2021, the population was 80,880. Aveiro has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate influenced by its proximity to the Ocean. The city typically attracts nature lovers and water sports amateurs. Aveiro is known as “the Portuguese Venice” with its canals.. It also is a bicycle-friendly city, where the lagoon plain contrasts with the mountainous region of the district’s inland. Study in the University of Aveiro
The University of Aveiro (UA) welcomes around 17,000 students, 14% of whom are international students (around 2,000) of 85 nationalities.
At the UA, international students have a choice of an extensive range of courses, which go from post-secondary education to the PhD level, taught in its departments and polytechnics that are dedicated to the most wide ranging areas of knowledge.
The Associação Académica da Universidade de Aveiro (AAUAv) and the other associative groups of the UA are fundamental when it comes to organizing cultural and sporting activities. It is made up of several bodies and sports clubs, course groups and cultural and sporting associations.

Research
Doing research at the UA means being part of an environment internationally recognized for the quality of its research and for its focus on applied research, which contributes to the social and economic development of the region and the country.
During the year 2021, 664 national and international research and technology transfer projects have been active in UAVR, of which 51 funded by ERASMUS+ and 57 by Horizon 2020. The UAVR is the host institution of 10 ERC Grants and 1 ERA Chair, it coordinates 2 FET Open and one TWINNING projects, among other relevant and strategic European projects.
CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials
The University of Aveiro have an associated laboratory with the Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials (CICECO). The laboratory’s mission is to develop the scientific and technological knowledge necessary for the innovative production and transformation of ceramics and organic-inorganic hybrids and materials for sustainable development. As a FAMEAIS student, you will have the opportunity to be supervised by a member of the largest Portuguese institute in the field of materials science and engineering if you were to carry out your master’s thesis in Aveiro.
